Poverty affects millions of people everyday in America. In the book The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros gives us examples of how poverty is caused. Rosa Vargas has a bunch of children with no dad to help her take care of them. He just left for no apparent reason. It says” Who cries everyday for the man who left without even leaving a dollar for bologna.” She didn’t know that he would leave her penny less. However Rosa probably should not have had so many kids. Not being able to watch over them. This is an example of making bad decisions and having bad luck. E’s mom was sort of in the same situation by not getting an education. She says” I could have been somebody” and “You want to know why I quit school? Because I didn’t have nice clothes.” Her mom should have stayed in school but it is pretty hard when you’re embarrassed about walking into school everyday. Wandering what people are going to think about you. However education always comes first, and E’s mom is a good example of that. Sandra Cisneros does not really say poverty is caused by just ones decision or just because of bad luck. It caused by a combination of many things and it needs to be fixed.
